Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Wow! What a strong first session! We covered fundamental math skills including add/subtracting negative numbers, multiplying/dividing negative numbers, order of operations, factors (factor trees), factors and multiples, reducing fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers (and reversals), adding/subtracting fractions, multiplying/dividing fractions, percents, exponents and square roots, solving simple equations, manipulating simple equations, and manipulating inequalities. From the fundamental drills, we moved on to problems from the student's Upper Level SSAT Test 1 diagnostic, including geometry and equations of lines. Our next session will focus on these areas. For homework, I recommended that he continue work on his vocabulary (I'll send him a list to utilize alongside his current reference list) and further reinforce his mathematical skills by working the practice tests I send. This was a very fast-paced and enjoyable session! Our next session is scheduled for Friday."
"The student will take some assessment tests soon, and so I have been working with him to prepare him. Today we went over the results of his practice test. He is working with his mom intensively to study vocabulary and roots based on a schedule they have created. On a separate note, he needs to work on his time management. I have instructed him to make sure he removes himself from noisy environments but also try to actively block out any disruptions. His second essay writing sample was a vast improvement from his first attempt. It had more structure and specific examples, yet it had too many colloquial expressions. I have discussed these style choices with him and I believe he will internalize these changes. For next time, he will complete an ISEE practice test, as well as another reading comprehension practice section."
"The student and I spent most of this session working through more problems so that she could practice her test-taking technique. We honed in on poetry as one of the topics that she should study in greater depth. I agreed that continuing our lessons online would be a good idea, and we set up some dates to meet."
