Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has several finals coming up, so we had lots of material to study for. We went over her Spanish commands since her teacher suggested she review them. We went over the rule for forming negative commands (yo form, drop o, switch to opposite vowel). Then she said she found a funny video to help her remember all of the irregulars. It was a good mnemonic. We went over each word and then did some practice identifying affirmatives, negatives, infinitives, and English meanings. After that we studied for World Cultures and English. She's been reviewing in class all week, and it's clearly helping. I asked her several general questions about the short stories she's read and asked her to compare and relate them to each other, since I think she'll have to do something similar on the final. Lastly, we went over some of the maps and vocab for World Cultures."
"Today, the student's homework consisted of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals as well as solving equations involving decimals."
"We used the guideline that the student's teacher gave them for review of the subject. We reviewed the topics covered in it, and she did well in most of them. Based on her performance, she should get a good grade in the final exam."
"The student and I went back through the final study guide, starting with logarithms. The student reviewed the detailed logarithmic notes we wrote out last week and was able to solve most of the log problems with little assistance. I just reminded her of the definition of logarithms so that she could more easily solve a couple of the log problems. We then moved to trig functions. The student was able to use the acronyms SOH CAH TOA to successfully set up the equation and solve for the answer. We then talked about graphing logarithms and reviewed and wrote out the steps we took to solve for the equation of a given log graph. The student felt confident in her ability to solve for the equation of an unlabeled log graph. I then briefly skimmed her study guide talking through the process to solve each problem and highlighted math tricks to use and conditions to be mindful of. The student felt equipped to study effectively and do well on the final. I'm waiting to hear her results! :)"
"We worked on the quadratic formula and some function notation. We will continue work on this at the next session. I left the worksheets that we worked on with the answer sheet to review more."
"The student and I covered completing the square. It took him some practice, but he figured out how completing the square works and was able to solve the problems very efficiently. His newest POW was also relatively straightforward; we brainstormed for a while and he managed to finish it in one session."
