Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began our session by exploring the essay component of the SAT writing section. We went over several sample prompts and essays to explore what makes a strong essay. Afterwards, I had her sample how she would write the essays, given what we discussed. It became apparent that she is fond of exploring polemical topics. I explained to her the rhetorical triangle and the reader-writer relationship. I wanted to convey to her that for the sake of getting the best possible score, she would be more likely to score higher if she used a topic that she believed in and wasn't one that might be too political for the SAT readers. She seemed to understand my concerns. For our last session, I have asked her to compose an essay for me, and we will go over it tomorrow and score it."
"We went over a review of the different skills and strategies to attack each section of the exam. I told the student to practice from her test prep book as much as possible to help her prepare for the exam."
"In preparation for the SAT exam the student is going to take, I had her do 2 Math, 1 Critical Reading, and 1 Writing section from one of the practice tests from the SAT study guide with the restriction that she had to skip 2 or 3 problems per section in order to help to finally break the SAT habit of trying to answer every question; I believe that the restriction helped the student focus more on problems that she had a higher probability of getting right and helped her avoid problems she was likely to get wrong. I asked the student to do one section of a practice test a day with that restriction until Wednesday, to do no further studying for the exam past that day, and to not only get a good night's sleep on the Friday night before the test but Thursday night as well."
