Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered using derivatives to solve rate word problems. We addressed changes in volume and area, strictly numerical examples, and airplane speed. The relationship between variables was discussed. I also mentioned the way to handle units and preferred simplification strategies for these problems. The student caught on very quickly so she should be proficient in no time."
"Topics covered: Factoring quadratic equations; working with standard vs. vertex form of quadratic equations to identify the vertex and axis of symmetry."
"The student has a test today on distributions and summary statistics that describe a distribution (e.g. mean, median, standard deviation, etc.). We spent our session reviewing the material and did a number of practice problems. She demonstrated a strong command over the material. I anticipate that she will do quite well on the exam. I had no concerns from this session."
"We worked on the next lesson which was understanding the behaviors of a polynomial by only looking at the equation and not the graph. We also focused on how to solve for the x intercepts just given the equation. He understood by the time we were done."
"The student and I went over solving systems of equations by graphing and using word problems. We also went over shading and where to shade the solution of two inequalities. She has a general grasp of the material."
"During today's session, we continued to work through the practice tests in the student's PSAT prep book, as well as discussing some math subject matter that she is currently working on in class. The student wants to completely finish the practice tests in her prep book before taking the test on the 15th."
"In our session, we reviewed systems of inequalities and graphed the solution. The student and I briefly reviewed some pre-cal topics we had previously covered, and she reported that there was nothing her teacher had assigned that she currently needs assistance with, although there will definitely be material for us to cover during our session on Wednesday."
"We went over the homework the student has due this weekend. Specifically, we discussed the theory behind independent samples t-tests. We then selected variables, ran the tests, and interpreted the test."
"The student and I went over a review sheet for his math test on Thursday. The focus of the review was on proportions and basic algebra ("solve for x"). He has a firm understanding of both of these concepts. After the math review we worked on a homework assignment for his science class (topic: circuits/conductivity). I expect that the student will continue to do well in his classes."
"We specifically covered her homework which included multi-digit subtraction, and addition as well as word problems. I taught her a new way to subtract "“ it has allowed her to speed up her ability to subtract and it is far more accurate now. We also worked on rounding numbers in the tens, hundreds, thousands and 10,000's "“ she definitely has improved to the point where she needs very little coaching. We continue to work with division, subtraction and properties of addition and multiplication. Once again this little girl is a trooper and is eager to learn. She has a great memory and once she learns something she is eager to put it to work right away."
"This session we covered some material on vector addition and basic ideas on forces. We made a lot of progress catching up with the student's class. She takes to the material quickly, I think she enjoyed a bit of one on one time."
"Today we talked about slope - how to find slope and what slope means. This essentially amounted to studying the point-slope formula and the slope-intercept form and how the two relate. We're going to look more at finding the y-intercept and generating a full equation from two points this Friday."
