"We went over the student's social studies homework. He had a map of South America and needed to label the countries, cities, rivers/lakes and major land forms."
"Today was the student's last lesson for the semester. She is obviously very anxious to be done with school, and seemed to have a bit more difficulty than usual keeping her mind on task. We focused, primarily, on helping her get ready for the social studies test she will be taking on Friday. The test is about Mexico's history, both as it relates to the US, as well as its earlier history with colonization by Spain. The student was supposed to be taking notes in the packets her teacher gave out in class. Many of the pages were complete, but she did not take notes every day. Due to this, she did not have all of the information she needed to fill out her study guide for the test. We discussed many of the concepts that she had missed in class. One concept with which she seemed to have experienced a great deal of confusion and frustration during class was Manifest Destiny. I explained what the idea of Manifest Destiny was, and how it played out on within the United States. The student had difficulty conceptualizing the timelines, as well as the areas (Spain, Mexico, pre-war borders, etc.), that were the topic of several of the questions. I had her get a globe so that I could show her how the interactions between specific areas worked (the US annexing Texas, for instance). She said that the parts which had been so frustrating and confusing to her before our lesson made much more sense after we went through the guide together. I was even able to quiz her a bit on information in the second packet (history of Mexico Part 2) before our time was done for the day. We may meet over the summer to work on math a few times, so that she doesn't lose any of the concepts she learned this year. She is planning to switch schools next year, and said that she would like to continue having me tutor her when school begins in the fall. As long as she can maintain her focus over the next few days, the student should be able to make it through her final tests/assignments with decent grades."
"I had an excellent session with the student. We discussed early civilizations including the 4 river valleys. We delved into more detail on Egypt and Mesopotamia. For next time, the student will study up on Ancient Greece and Rome."
