Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student wanted to go ahead and start reviewing the new chapters they are going to be covering, so we went through the Chapter 21 study guide together and answered all the questions. She is very interested in the molecular biology techniques used in this chapter, and since I do work in this field, it was very helpful for her to learn about how biology is actually used in the laboratories today. We talked about DNA fingerprinting, PCR, Southern Blotting, and other techniques that are used."
"Today we went over the concepts of molar mass, Avogadro's numbers, dimensional analysis between grams, moles, and atoms. We also worked on determining molecular formula mass, empirical formula mass. And we also worked out steps in determining the molecular and empirical formulas and percent composition."
"In this session we covered dimensional analysis and using mole calculations to convert between number of molecules and specific weights of atoms and molecules. As the session progressed the student showed a higher grasp of the concepts and was able to explain solve the sample problems and explain his train of thought to me. We also discussed future tutoring sessions and a plan to raise his grade for the following semester. There is still more work to be done as he did not express complete understanding of beginning concepts of the class but we will use one session a week to focus on past lessons while we use the other session a week to focus on current topics. I am very optimistic about future sessions with this student."
