Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today's session included the student working to re-vamp his essay. He made some decisions about how the introduction and conclusion were going to differ from the other essay he had written, while using parts of the essay that worked. We discussed different aspects of grammar and how/when they are useful in certain contexts, and he systematically went through each paragraph checking for improvements. Before our next session, he will come up with a more well-rounded conclusion idea and start working on his essay that's due next week."
"The student sent me her essays for college entrance and the common application to review during our session. We had already discussed the overall idea that she wanted to convey in each of her essays. This session focused on tightening up her sentences and paragraphs to focus in on her main idea. Her essays were already strong, but they had some words and sentences that were unnecessary. I helped her to go through the essays and identify what could be removed to make the essay clearer. We also discussed the ways in which punctuation can help to clarify her writing, such as through the use of commas, dashes, and colons. In her main essay, we also discussed how to create strong opening and closing lines. At the end of the session, she said that she felt much better about her essays because they now conveyed the message that she was hoping to send."
"The student brought his third version of his personal statement today and we went over it line by line again. I think it has reached its finished state. I made some suggestions. We then went over some vocabulary words and we took turns using them in sentences. I added notes to his essay and I created a vocabulary exercise document for him to review. I encouraged him to get started on his other essay, and he is bringing me a copy on Thursday at 12:30. He also has vocabulary homework, to write a unified statement with his vocab words. These words come from a list of SAT words online. We also discussed the wisdom of submitting his essay now before the actual deadline. I encouraged him to get it in right away, before the crowd."
