Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In preparation for the SAT test, I wanted to test the student's knowledge of advanced vocabulary. At the beginning of our session, I gave her a vocabulary crossword puzzle activity to complete. She did very well and there were only a couple of words that she had never seen before. We reviewed those words and developed the definitions into context. After this activity, she completed another SAT essay draft. This time, she used majority of the allotted time, going back to revise any mistakes. This second draft was an improvement from our last session. To finish up, we reviewed writing multiple choice questions out of the SAT prep book."
"During this session, the student and I continued our work with ISEE math. We did more work with fractions, decimals, and percentages, which comprise a large amount of the material that will be found on the ISEE. We have covered adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing fractions."
"The student has a great attitude, and is fun to work with. During our session yesterday we talked about his goals and his thoughts on the ACT, and then started working on preparing for the English section. We made it over two thirds of the way through the practice English materials (prior to the practice tests), talking about each problem as we went through and good strategies for finding the answers. He seems to be picking it up quickly! See him next week."
"During this session we solved part 1 of a previous exam. The student was able to solve the majority of the questions on his own without any help and struggled with a very small number of them. Throughout the session, we also talked about some test taking strategies for multiple choice questions such as elimination and using units to determine correct answers. We also discussed some techniques that can save him time on exams such as using estimation or powers of ten to approximate answers."
"During this session we discussed types of triangles. We discussed scalene, equilateral, and isosceles triangles. We then did more of her summer math packet."
"The student reviewed for a vocabulary test on three chapters. He knows most of his English meanings and Latin forms. I asked him to review his genders of nouns and conjugation numbers of his verbs. He set a goal of making an 84 on this test tomorrow."
