Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Yesterday I worked with the student. We started with his reading homework and he did really well. The student is a very bright kid. He is a very determined and independent child. He takes his work seriously and we have great sessions together."
"We worked on sight words and Singapore math. The student has finally gotten through his kindergarten sight words list and has mastered the first 37 commonly used words on the first grade list. He is making so much progress. He has come a long way from when we first began working with each other. He is on page 89 of his Singapore math book already. He loves the format and he is eager to complete the book. I am excited about how excited he has become about learning. We also practiced reading from short kindergarten level books and handwriting."
"The student and I had another great day. He was excited to read both Captain Underpants and Humphrey's Puppy Problem. We discussed his word journal and he wrote in his daily journal. His writing has really improved. In September, he was writing one sentence. Now he's filling up a page. We discussed weight in Singapore math. We also reviewed subtraction and addition mad minute. We read about plants. Our book provided a seed experiment that he could do at home. We talked about plants that you eat."
"The student has a unit test on Thursday. She would like to spend the next two sessions going over the problems on the study guide. It sounds like they turn in the study guide without getting it corrected before the test, so I encouraged her to check her final answers with a calculator, and showing me the ones she got wrong so we can figure out a way for her to understand better. The test is on long division with decimals. On the estimation problems, I had her skip count to find "easy" dividends. She was asked on the study guide to draw a model to represent division. I encouraged her to always draw big on a separate piece of paper when showing work."
"For today's tutoring session, we went through the homework and review that the student needs for all his classes. Today we reviewed over science, health and social studies. He completed his social studies homework and his health homework. We began the outline for his science assignment which is to design a virus and provide information. He will start that project tomorrow. Additionally, we will review over math and his English and Language Arts class. We talked extensively about bullying from his health class which was a good discussion to have. Overall, today was a good session."
"Today, the student and I went over her math homework. It was focusing on finding the mean of data sets. She seemed to grasp this idea quite easily. We also practiced learning how to spell the names of countries for a quiz coming up in social studies. As always, she is a joy to be around. I am sincerely going to miss working with her. She is always positive and laughs a lot. I'm glad we had such an enjoyable last session."
