Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I discussed the structure of the quantitative reasoning sections of the test and reviewed a few test taking strategies for success on the math portion. I encouraged her to practice math without a calculator as much as she can in order to be prepared for the exam. The student then took a 25-question diagnostic math test, and we discussed the solutions to several of the problems that were especially difficult. I helped the student build a list of formulas she'll need to know for the test. She should start committing these to memory and working with them as often as she can. During the next session, we will practice doing operations drills and focus on algebra. I look forward to it!"
"The student did a fantastic job today. He was very focused and it was evident that he has been studying independently. He showed me multiple practice tests that he took using online tools. We reviewed his test results and looked at ways he can improve. One point to note is that the student answered the questions very quickly, and I discussed pacing strategies with him. We went through a verbal practice test question by question and the student did an excellent job of making his own definition for each stem word then finding a corresponding answer choice. I emphasized the importance of reading each choice before selecting and answering. He also excelled at creating effective bridging sentences for his analogies. He was able to find correct answer choices with ease. We worked on strategies that involved eliminating answer choices, and how to make a best "guess." We wrapped the session up with a quick math lesson on percentages and cross multiplying. I showed him some techniques to estimate and create "friendly" numbers that are easy to compute without a calculator. He was motivated and eager to learn today. I am proud of the effort he put in over the past week."
"Completed verbal section of the practice test. Assigned her approximately ten vocab words to study. Finished reading section of practice test as well, and she did really well on these. For the rest of the session we returned to math drills, especially percents. I assigned her 12 math problems for homework."
