Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a good second session. I asked him to complete the practice test we began in our first session. He did, and we reviewed the answers to the questions he missed and figured out why he missed them. We also reviewed vocabulary words he didn't know as we moved through the practice test. While he has good process of elimination/reasoning skills for when he doesn't know the definitions of words that arise on the test, his score would be helped significantly if we can improve his vocabulary a bit. He wrote down all of the words we learned in reviewing his test, and I asked him to work through 3 letters of the alphabet per day in his SAT vocabulary book. We'll continue to learn vocabulary words during our tutoring sessions, too. Second, we reviewed and improved the introductions/outlines to SAT essays that I had him write between sessions. His ability to come up with sophisticated theses and compose paragraphs that present a logical flow of ideas has improved significantly. Further, his capacity to choose examples that most strongly demonstrate his answers to the questions has improved by leaps and bounds, and it will only get better as we continue to work on the essay section. Finally, we read some actual student responses to an SAT essay question. We identified what was working about the essays that scored well and determined what should have changed about those that did not. For next session, he is going to take a full verbal/writing practice test including essay. We will spend our next session going over his responses and reviewing concepts as we go. Looking forward to next session!"
"For this session, I've asked the student to complete several practice SAT Critical Reading sections in order to obtain, hopefully, a better measure of where he currently stands. Additionally, I asked him to complete one of these sections with the 1-Pass-2-Pass system to see how it affects his ability to manage time on the test, and I encouraged him to leave those questions blank that were too difficult to eliminate any answer choices. For this session, we worked through a Critical Reading diagnostic together, reviewing some of the strategies that I have been mentioning along the way."
"The student did well today, although she needs to remember to check her math answers. That having been said, with a bit more practice, she should be well on her way to her goals."
