Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on test preparation for the high school mathematics placement examination. We went over problems in the student's test prep book. Topics included fractions, decimals, long division, word problems, order of operations and conversion to different units of measurement. He felt comfortable with order of operations and long division. He needs to continue practicing fractions and decimals, as well as word problems. Next time we're going to work more on understanding how to approach word problems to ensure that he understands the concepts."
"Today we worked on concepts like the Lagrange parameter, empirical derivatives, partial derivatives, integration by parts, integration by substitution and D-tests."
"Today we reviewed the Taylor and Maclaurin series, the polar coordinate system, integration, arc length area calculation, trigonometrical integrations and partial integration."
"We worked on graphing quadratic functions and solving equations. Then we worked on solving polynomial equations by factoring. Finally, we looked at the factor theorem and the fact that a polynomial of degree n has exactly n linear factors."
"For this session we spent the first 30 minutes reviewing computing multi digit decimal problems, as this is part of what the student will be assessed on in school. The remainder of the session was spent on greatest common factors and least common multiples. When told which of the two of these topics the student is to solve, he is able to do so with no issues. However, the student was having difficulty differentiating between what a factor and multiple is in word problems or when the textbook is not in front of him. In order to help him tell the difference we memorized that the word multiple resembles multiply, therefore when finding a multiple you are multiplying the given numbers by 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., then finding the smallest number that is common. This strategy helped the student decipher between the two and solve problems and word problems where it wasn't given which of the two you need to use in order to find the answer."
"The student and I discussed regression modelling for continuous and discrete data, statistics for goodness of fit of regression variables, and cleaning and selection of data and data sets. She is very excited about having new data to share with her field, but aware of the challenge of rigorously verifying that data. We both have homework: hers is to continue the cleaning and processing of her field data which is extensive. I will select and regressions on the desired data fields."
