"The student continues to be an excellent student with a strong work ethic. Today we worked on three new essays for the college application. The topics were an activity she does for pleasure, a difficult situation and how she overcame it, and in which department at MIT she would like to work and why. The main issue in each essay is that she has the tendency to tell a story or write descriptively about an experience, but then only minimally discusses or reflects on how that experience exemplifies a skill or personal attribute. She has the tendency to let the story "speak for itself" where a more direct and frank articulation of her qualities would serve to better showcase her as a desirable addition to the university. For each essay, we worked online and used brackets to indicate where changes should be made as well as comments in the margin to offer suggestions and reminders of what was discussed. I suggested she let the application rest to work on other supplemental essays for other applications to give her some time away to get some perspective. We looked at the essay from last session about the personal attribute of which she is proud and how it impacted her life; again, more reflection on the attribute and its impact was needed with less focus on the example. Great student."
"We went over the student's essay. I am very excited by the growth! The essay has a wonderful arc and great language. There is a good sense of his personality. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the shorter essays."
"This was my first meeting with the student. We reviewed six of his college application essays / questions. We created outlines for the two needing the most work, completed three others, and began the process of reducing the word count on the sixth. For tomorrow, the student will review the three for edits, and we will meet again to finish these, as well as work on the remainder. Our plan is to do this until we are completed."
