Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Because of two snow days, the student hadn't been to his algebra II class since our last lesson. The exponents problems were more challenging, so we spent a good amount of time on exponents today, especially negative exponents. He has more exponents practice for Thursday. These are so important in algebra that he should be practicing them regularly. Finally, we returned to some important concepts from last lesson, focusing on the number sets, the definition of polynomials, and the quadratic formula - he remembered the quadratic formula today! The axis of symmetry and the discriminant were on the tip of his tongue as well."
"Finished packet on two polynomial equations in a fraction. Found horizontal and vertical asymptotes, found domain of the function, found end and intermediate behavior. Studied chapter test."
"The student and I had our last session and prepared for her upcoming final exam. We reviewed the new things she is learning, which involve graphing hyperbolas and other functions."
"We did a big review of ratios, rates, and proportions. After a brief demo of each concept and some practice she started to do very well on the problems. I think mastery of these types of questions will really help her on her high school entrance exam. We finished the day with several questions involving this topic. The student is for the most part doing very well. She gets most of the questions we do correct. I think one thing that will help take her to the next level is working on her pace and organization. I think if she showed her work in more of a step by step format and took time to really think about each step she would understand her thought process more and be able to solve the harder questions. We will definitely work on this! Next session I plan on doing percents (also an important topic for her exam)."
"The student focused on reading, writing, and drawing time. He excels at reading and drawing time. Completing calculations involving time was a challenge throughout the session. By end of session, he was more comfortable solving problems involving time. We will continue to practice next week."
"The student took the practice placement test for 7th grade math. She only completed the non calculator section. The assessment will be graded and return to her next week citing strengths and weaknesses. We spent the remainder of the time going over the topics that will be covered in 7th grade math. We explored evaluating exponents more thoroughly, with her completing a practical and online exercise."
