Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed ACT Mathematics. It went very well. The student has not actually taken trig yet, but even given that he knows how to convert to radians, and what SOH CAH TOA is. Beyond that, not a ton is needed for the ACT. He is doing really amazingly overall."
"Within a few practice tests, the student seemed to be gaining his confidence. I will continue to urge him to use the methods I've suggested, as I feel they will be helpful on the test in a few weeks."
"In this session, we began by working on reading. We worked through two reading passages, and I timed her as she read each passage. She used more time than ideal for the passages, so we practiced saying out loud what was most important to notice in each passage and what could be ignored or skimmed over. I also suggested that she try to just read the first and last sentence of each paragraph then to look broadly over the passage if she finds that she consistently uses more time than ideal. As shown by how she summarized each passage and by her answers to questions, she had a better understanding of the humanities passage that we worked on compared to a passage about the natural sciences. We decided that, when taking the ACT, she should first work on the passages where she is stronger - those on literature and on the humanities - then come back to the passages on natural and social science. In the second part of this session, we worked on one science passage. I also timed her as she worked through the passage - she used more time than ideal to finish the passage. Though she seemed to understand the main idea of the passage, she had trouble reading the associated graph and answering the questions based on it. We practiced reading questions to tell what information from the graph would be relevant and talked about how to look at the graph, including paying attention to axis labels and keys. I recommended that she continue to practice her timing for reading and science, skimming over less important parts or adjusting her reading time so she can finish reading each of the reading passages in 3.5 minutes and the science passages in 1 minute."
