Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered: different states of matter and phase changes, density, physical and chemical separation techniques and the difference between pure substances and mixtures. Reviewed sigfigs and graphing. For homework, student is to finish Unit 2 review vocabulary sheet."
"We covered ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA, specifically looking at assumptions, output (the ANOVA table), and issues with violations of the assumptions and interpretation. Additionally, we discussed her dissertation and research, specifically talking about the feasibility of her idea and some important statistical and methodological concepts to take into consideration."
"The student and I covered nuclear structures, DNA replication and mitosis. The student has a good grasp on the big concepts. She has lecture notes and the textbook that she should review on her own."
"We covered Punnett squares, genomic testing, and pedigrees. The student was struggling with more open ended questions where more than one genetic option was possible, as well as creating pedigrees. The student was prepared with notes and problems and very appreciative of tips and advice to solve the problems. We worked on pedigree tricks and plenty of tricky questions and how to go about solving those problems. The student needed help with the new material for this class, but is slowly understanding the material after this session. We covered a lot of main genetics topics and the student is able to piece together some complex problems!"
"Tonight, the student and I went over calculating the reaction forces of beam loading problems. First, we went over how to start a problem, which is by a free body diagram. He was having a hard time visualizing the reaction forces in the problem; however, after multiple physical examples, he was able to successfully draw the forces (due to a pin or roller constraint). Next, we went over the three systems of equations that are used to calculate the reaction forces. After going through an example slowly, step by step, he was able to understand their relationship together. Once this was completed, we worked on additional examples using point moments, and symmetric loading problems. I believe a lot of information really clicked for him, and to ensure this, I assigned him four problems that we will go over tomorrow in another tutoring session."
"We went over rate law chemical kinetics. She went over her homework, but some of the problems were very difficult."
