Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the student's draft for her UC application essay on leadership. After the student did some revising with what she had written, she added a concluding paragraph. She is now ready to proofread and submit the essay."
"Helped the student with an essay exam in BIS370/Dimensions in Liberal Studies. Helped the student organize notes and research materials, then prepared notes into essay form and checked for grammar, punctuation, etc."
"This week, the student and I reviewed his two college essays. We talked about expanding these strong essays even further and deleting some of the specific classes references which were becoming repetitive in both essays. For the first one, we talked about setting the scene for his first debate in the beginning of the essay. This will make more specific and unique his interest in debate. We also talked about subtly incorporating information which will show that he has visited the school and substantiate some of the claims he makes. For the second one, we discussed making the first scene slightly more vivid with the addition of several details. Additionally, we discussed emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of both the college's and the student's interests as the central theme of the essay. He did great work today."
"Today the students both worked on reading comprehension. We read passages together and discussed strategies that help enhance reading comprehension. As we read the passage, we looked for and highlighted important details such as dates, sentences that revealed the main idea, and high level vocabulary words. We also discussed how to eliminate wrong answer choices. Each student was assigned some reading comprehension for homework. Student 1 and I also worked on adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. She was assigned some more examples to practice for homework. I corrected Student 2's writing passage from last time, and he will rewrite it for homework."
"This session was mostly excellent. The student did a great job on his homework from Monday and was able to read those books very successfully. I was very impressed with his progress, as he is consolidating more and more letter formations of long vowel sounds in his memory. We again returned to his older workbook for short vowel review, which is proving to be quite helpful so far. He has a couple of the most difficult blue-level books to read this weekend, and soon we will be ready to start tackling the new lessons of the green-level books."
"The student continues to retain the information we have presented in previous sessions. Her ability to use her phonemic awareness has improved significantly, and she can now independently generate words when requested. She is also showing improvement with her ability to generate and answer "wh-" questions. She is improving in her sight words as well."
