Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I met today to help prepare her for her first test, which was this Thursday and Friday. We discussed problems of the type we expected to see on the test. The problems would involve forces, friction, and kinematics."
"The student has a test on Friday. He had a worksheet on to complete on reactions, which had half completed prior to the session. We also reviewed his homework assignment on percent composition and empirical/ molecular formulas. His teacher had also given them a practice exam to work and the student was able to answer all of the questions rather easily. He is well prepared for the test. He still needs to routinely review his ion/compound's nomenclature and he should be fine."
"The student is working toward the Exam 2 on Friday. Most of the session was spent on interpreting IR spectrum for specific bond types given the empirical formula and the mass spectrophotometer."
"We finished the student's review problems for the section, then worked on preparing her for the test this week. I wrote some force problems, and she was able to solve them. She needs to remember to draw the x and y vector diagrams when solving force problems."
"Student 1 is a sharp student with needs in Physics and Writing to support his goal of competing in academic games. His brother Student 2, a fifth grader, wants support in Science. We discussed concepts and illustrated examples in motion, kinematics, vectors, force, and momentum. The inclusion of mathematics principles helped to focus the discussions for both. I suggested organizing mathematics to avoid rushing to an answer instead of showing steps along the process; this has lost points for Student 1 recently. In the second hour, I assigned a writing project due this Wednesday, to practice writing a multi-paragraph theme, the subject of which he selected and populated himself, and in accordance with my Expository Theme Outline. I will grade the paper and discuss it with him at our next meeting, scheduled for Friday. Student 2 will send me another paper for review as well."
"We covered a review of some more general chemistry topics on electron configuration and geometrical structures of common molecules like water, methane, and ammonia. Then, we moved ahead to alkanes, IUPAC naming, and hydrocarbons. The student was not struggling with much on this session since a lot of it is review for him. He seems very excited for this class and is taking charge during the session by asking good questions. We did a review the last 10 minutes of the reactions we covered over the break. He has his first exam in 2 weeks."
