"I prepared the student for her test, predominantly by going over the essay questions provided to her by the professor. We focused on the historical findings essay the most: going over the findings of Watson & Crick, Jacob & Monod, and Hershey & Chase. We went over the specifics of each pairs discoveries and the implications for the study of DNA. There were a lot of difficult concepts here, and though the Hershey & Chase experiment was particularly difficult to grasp, the student did really well with the concepts surrounding Jacob & Monod. Then we did an overview of DNA replication, which the student seems to really understand! We also discussed her bringing a highlighter to the exam, so that she could highlight key points in each essay, short answer, or multiple choice questions, so as not to forget anything as she goes along."
"His overall grade dropped from 75 to 74. During the exam he felt he would get a C or B. He also said that questions from the material we reviewed were fine (such as the macromolecules), but that questions not covered in class were problematic. Today we went over: cell theory, organelles, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and cytoplasm. We defined the terms, drew cell anatomy, made diagrams, and worked on worksheets."
"We discussed energy needed for cell metabolism, how energy is converted into chemical energy, how activation energy is needed to allow a reaction to occur, how an enzyme will lower this activation energy so the reaction can occur quicker, and how inhibition (competitive and non-competitive) will modulate the enzyme's activity."
"We covered several of the macromolecules, including carbohydrates and lipids. We discussed the nature and function of lipids and their role in the plasma membrane. The student is very bright and caught on to these concepts after they were explained to her. We also went over a lab that covered macromolecules, and we briefly went over nucleic acids and proteins, which are the two next topics that will be covered in her class."
"I covered the topics of cell growth, cell differentiation, and cell division in eukaryotic cells. Cell cycle involving mitosis was also covered in detail. Prior knowledge was gauged and based on that, new concepts were introduced to link them to the prior concepts. The student was keen on learning new information and was able to comprehend the usefulness of the new concepts introduced."
