Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the first half of the session working through a packet the student found online for ISEE test prep. It involved order of operations, integer operations, FDP, and multiples and factors. We spent the second half working through the prep book reinforcing the skills from the day before and from the beginning of that session. We also worked on more on fractions. "
"The student had missed several days of school this week, so I used the presentation her teacher had given that week to teach her the different pathways of the endocrine system. I quizzed her on the different pathways by making her explain the unlabeled pictures and encouraged her to make flash cards for the hormones produced by the different endocrine organs."
"Met with the student for one more hour as a preparation for the ACT. We went through a sample English section together using targeted prompts and context-based reading to get to the answers. We came up with a step-by-step strategy for isolating the right answers on grammar questions, and for the rest of the sections (on which time was an issue), we talked again about how to maximize time and come up with quicker, accurate answers."
"Student 1 finished his rough draft and Student 2 finished about 75% of his. Student 3 and I did phonics, letter sounds, and read a few books while working on fluency. We then did about 5 pages in a work book."
"Today the student and I focused mainly on algebra. She has a test coming up this week over conic sections. We practiced graphing the variety of conic sections and found solutions when working with multiple equations. She did very well, though she sometimes confused the equations for hyperbolas and ellipses. We then switched to chemistry very briefly to discuss kinetics and equilibrium (Le Chatelier's principle)."
"We covered some Java basics, including Java Classes and variable declaration. We created a couple of example programs that showed how to declare a variable and print it out. The student seemed receptive to the information provided. He has never programmed before, so this will be challenging for him in the near term."
