Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session began with working on math homework. She was responsible for completing both multiplication and division problems and I noticed that she is able to quickly solve number expressions and word problems. I spoke with her and had her plan the response before writing. She seemed to be able to write a better response when this strategy was used. We also studied fact families and wrote number stories for each fact. I left reading, writing, and math practice sheets."
"The student was working on percents, but needed help understanding percents in terms of proportions. We drilled a few problems and I created a template for where he should place the part, the whole, and the percent in a proportion before he solves the problem. I then created a worksheet for him to review his skills."
"The student and I did practice problems to prepare for the math section of the common core test. We spent half an hour on long division, and half an hour on multiplication. Overall he did great. I also worked with another student for half an hour on shape-based practice problems. We worked mostly on finding patterns. He had trouble focusing at first, but he gets very into the problems if you create a story around them."
"Today the student and I started working on factors, prime, and composite numbers. The student picked up on the concepts very quickly and these are concepts that we will continue to work on in the future as well. We also worked on multiplication facts which is something he needs to continue to practice each day in working towards having them memorized. Next session we will review our work today and start working on long division."
"There was a change in plan for today's lesson as the student had an exam she is taking in the morning for a private school and needed to review/prepare for that. We used her test booklet to go over some sample problems she may encounter on the test for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and mathematics. We also discussed test taking techniques, wording of questions giving helpful hints on how to answer them, and time management on exams. On Tuesday we will pick up where we left off for planned lesson work. Also, she mentioned she has a vocabulary quiz she wants to review for. We will create and practice with flash cards and I will create a quick vocabulary review activity. At the end of the session we will also try to do some more test review problems too, so she is well prepared for upcoming entrance exams."
"We reviewed problems from the multiple choice section of a practice AP test. We spent a lot of time on how to use a Z-table and/ or the calculator to find areas under a normal distribution. We also talked about the differences between a normal distribution and a t-distribution, and when to use either."
