Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I had the student do a learning styles assessment and discovered, as I thought, that he was a Nonverbal/Visual Learner. He will be using highlighters as he reads his materials and writing his notes using pens with different colored ink. According to the student and his parents, these sessions are more to make sure that the student is studying chemistry and biology at a certain every week. The student understands the material, but it seems that maybe he is the type of student that does not need much studying to "get it". Today, we went over two sections of Chemistry involving covalent bonds and one section of Biology involving healthy diet."
"First, we went over the student's HW on paragraph unity and coherence. Then, we reviewed an English passage and discussed it. After that, we went over 10 more math problems. We discussed 3, and I gave him remedial practice to do related to the problems. Then, we reviewed another English passage, discussed the next 4 math problems, and worked on remedial practice. Finally, we reviewed another English passage and discussed the last 3 problems."
"During this session, the student and I worked heavily on essay writing skills. Using the workbook, we went through three exercises and wrote two essays. I think he is very creative and good at coming up with ideas. We went through strategies he can use for improvement, including "pre-writing" his ideas before he actually starts on the essay."
"We continued to work on constructing the student's own study guide by continuing on with the chapter that is under revision for a test on Wednesday. In addition to creating a note-based study guide for the end of the chapter, we went over a number of the sample questions provided by his teacher to review."
"The student worked on subtraction with borrowing and addition. He then worked on an activity from his summer reading. He made a list of things he would need to go camping. He also read a passage on sports and then started a writing prompt on his favorite sport and why he likes to play it."
"After some conversation about the student's busy work week, we reviewed pp.71-72, then went on into Chapter 8 and worked through Ex.8.1. We continued in Conversation pp.44-46 going through the conversation. For next session, I will look up something about Weimar and its cultural and literary history."
