"Session Fourteen Tutoring Review During the student's fourteenth session we focused on Tutoring Goal(s) 1, 3, 5, and 6, which involved problem solving, reinforcing studying chemistry, developing problem solving techniques, building confidence, and reviewing her homework assignments. Below is a synopsis of the topics we reviewed today in chemistry: We reviewed the octagon rule, orbital diagrams, and valence electron configurations. I gave her several methods for remembering information for the periodic table, the series, groups, and electron configurations, and demonstrated problem solving techniques. We practiced identifying the different types of elements. We completed her chemistry homework. Homework and our Plan for Session XV: Our next session is scheduled for Sunday at 11am. I asked her to memorize the methods for remembering elemental information that we discussed today. I asked her to review the textbook chapters covering valence electron configurations and the problem solving techniques that we discussed today. Sunday we will have a brief overview of any concepts that she may not understand from her homework, and then we will focus on her newly assigned homework problems. Notes: She is doing extremely well in algebra, and though she had questions initially regarding her chemistry homework she was easily able to apply any new problem solving techniques after only one demonstration."
"I helped the student finish a math project. We then went over some work in nuclear chemistry and I gave him some pointers on a project he has due for his chemistry class."
"We went over her ACT-type questions, focusing on developing dynamic approaches and critical thinking methods in problem solving."
"We studied for the student's history test (supply, demand, agriculture, and other vocabulary words). She is working on her big project about Queen Hatshepsut. I brought a poster board for her to work on over the weekend while she is creating her costume and memorizing her speech. She will be busy up until then. Also, she has an upcoming spelling test and a math test. We covered fraction equivalents. I used graph paper, which helped a lot since each square is the same size. I recommend that she continue showing her work as she has with me during her lessons. She is doing well so far! She read Charlotte's Web like she was supposed to in order to spread out the workload prior to the quiz on Friday. She is diligent with completing work as soon as it is assigned."
"The student's homework packet included practice questions for the assessment exam test, which she will be taking next week in school. She completed these problems very quickly and noted how easy they were for her. These included some simple multiplication problems, addition, and subtraction practice as well. We completed some more test practice together, and she was pretty good at it and enjoyed the game aspect of the website we were using. She stayed focused and got a lot of practice in during this session."
"We covered the concept of order of operations with parenthesis, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction (PEMDAS, excluding exponents) with some additional practice in subtraction and division. The student was very enthusiastic about learning and doing the practice problems. He has some trouble focusing and makes some mistakes when he goes too fast. We will work through these by practicing on being careful and paying attention to detail, with continued practice and writing it down step by step."
