Tutoring review by Maddy Grace in Orchard Park, NY
The student is now working on just various applications and permutations of rational functions. He's having trouble arithmetically working things out. The word problems gave him trouble at first, but after doing two or three he seemed to have a pretty solid grasp on how to set them up. We also did some "find all the info on this equation and graph it" functions, and he can do those very well!

For our session today, the student and I focused on preparing for a unit test he had coming up the following morning on trigonometry. We worked through a practice test, examining the types of problems that would be on the test and discussing strategies for approached the problems. Reference angles and graphs of sine, cosine, and tangent were giving the student the biggest problems, so we spend the longest time on those. We examined properties and characteristics such as range, phase shift, and period in discussing the trig functions, and practiced calculating these values from either a graph or explicit function. Because reference angles have still been a challenge, we created a study/cheat sheet so the student has the strategy for finding reference angles all in one place while studying. We also practiced some problems using the Laws of Sines and Cosines, but this is an area that the student felt comfortable in so we didn't spend a lot of time. Finally, we solved problems that involved evaluating a trig function by means of the unit circle, and discussed which function corresponded to which coordinate focusing on using radians to measure the angles.

We are planning to meet on Labor Day to finish readings for her next class. Also, we briefly discussed a couple assignments from her human geography class.

We also discussed testing for autocorrelation via the Durbin-Watson test statistic, and methods for smoothing time series such as exponential smoothing, and Holt's and Winter's methods.

For this first session, the student and I spent time discussing what she feels she most needs work on and determining what we should focus on. She is mostly struggling with systems of equations and inequalities, so we worked on that. We also spent some time working on her study guide for the final exam coming up.
