Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session the student and I went over the slope-intercept and point-slope forms of the equation for a line and how they relate to one another. We covered how to find the equation for a line given the coordinates of two points the line is known to intersect, finding the slope of a line, and finding the y-intercept of a line. He has a little trouble identifying which form a line is written in, but is able to apply them correctly once he identifies the correct form to use. I gave him some flashcards with some important equations to look over to help commit these forms and equations to memory."
"We worked on his homework as well as learned about multiplying, and dividing exponents as well as factoring and multiplying binomials. He continues to succeed at a very driven pace and learns quickly from his mistakes - he is able to do quite a bit with little to no coaching."
"We covered solving multi-variable equations for a particular variable. We worked through problems on his review and I also made up a few problems to continue his practice. By the end of the session he seemed to understand the concept."
"We reviewed the chapter two quizzes to prepare for the chapter two test. I gave him various practice problems, and I aided him through completion. He struggled most with distribution with negative numbers, but after numerous examples and technique suggestions, he improved. By the end of the session, he felt more comfortable with the test materials and was ready for the exam. I left him with my notes and the examples I provided for him to review more."
"We covered scientific notation, simplifying expressions, analyzing graphs and writing numbers in standard notation. The student completed a homework assignment on graphs with me and scored an A (93). She continues to make progress on subtraction. I have no concerns regarding this session."
"Today we covered the work on intercepts and slope that the student was introduced to over this week. I had her work through her assigned problem set, which she was able to do mostly, and then I wrote up a set of problems for certain areas. After working out one of the problems over finding x-intercept with her, she showed that she was able to repeat the steps necessary on her own."
"The student has a test on Friday. His teacher actually did not give the class the retake test, but he instead combined it with new material for the test on Friday. We went through his study guide together, and I made up extra problems as needed. He is showing good knowledge of the concepts of the different types of functions, graphing them, domain, range, end behavior, and increasing/decreasing notation. I showed him the rules to determine if it is linear, exponential, or quadratic."
"During this session, the student and I went over how to get the correct values when graphing a function of "y". We used the input-output method, where you plug in values for x into the equation. After much practice she started to understand very well! She understood how certain equations could give particular graphs as well."
"The student and I covered functions and equations with word problems. Most of her problems was with converting word problems into math language. She had problems to work out after I left. The session went very well."
"Worked with the student on practicing for his quiz on linear equations. He has a good understanding of plugging in values, getting y by itself, and understanding slope."
"Pre-Algebra- specifically evaluating expressions involving fractions and operators, even solving for single variable. Did not see any scores/grades to note progress. The student struggles mostly due to a lack of prior foundation in pre-algebra. I think she understands fragments of pre-algebra and mostly needs to fix minor errors. I told her that borrowing a textbook would be best, but looking on-line for examples works as well (and that I would be looking on-line later to forward good example problems)."
"Today we worked on solving systems of equations using substitution and elimination. She does well mathematically, but does still have a little trouble with word problems, though it is definitely getting better. She also talked to me about answering a difficult question on her last test correctly."
