Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started this session with some long and short vowel sounds, this time focusing on long I made by "y" and short "i". We also talked about "oo" combinations. Then we worked on calendar skills a bit by finding dates on the December calendar and writing the names of all the months. Finally, we practiced some more subtraction. The student is doing a great job with everything, but especially with her math facts."
"I worked with both students. The first student did a test prep worksheet focusing on word choice. She also wrote a paragraph about her favorite tradition, in preparation for her placement test she will take next month. The second student read a story and answered questions about it. He also read a short non-fiction piece about snakes and answered several short answer questions."
"Today the student and I worked really hard on using integration by parts to find the anti-derivative of a function. We also talked about finding the limits in a series and L'Hopital's rule to find those limits. We also talked about finding the integral of a graph using shell method. She did a wonderful job understanding the concepts of integration"
"Today, the student and I covered the parts of polynomials, operations involving polynomials, exponent rules (including negative exponents), equations in slope-intercept form, graphing equations, and some geometry rules (including solving for missing sides in similar triangles, and special triangle rules -- 45-45-90 and 30-60-90). She did well during our session today and I think she's feeling more confident now."
"This was mostly a check-in with student. We discussed ways to stay motivated, the importance of organization and planning, studying techniques, as well as staying on top of assignments and homework."
"The student and I reviewed chapters 5-13 for his upcoming final tomorrow. We first covered chapter 13, which is mostly intro to statistics material including: mode, median, range, standard deviation, variation, mean, etc. He understood it pretty well. After that, we reviewed topics such as equations for lines, systems of equations, exponential functions, simplifying radical expressions, rational numbers, and practically every topic we've discussed since our first session. This was our last session."
"We completed the chapter 8 review problems, and went over the vocabulary from all chapters (5-8), twice. I think he knows a lot more than he thinks he does, and I tried to encourage him to go into the final exam with a positive and confident attitude. It's been wonderful working with him!"
"We went over the student's PSAT scores and discussed goals for her upcoming ACT test date. I gave her an overview of the entire test, and we tried some example math, science, English and writing questions."
"The student and I went over a few reading sections, an English section, and a math section. He's going to work through a reading section or two a day, and an English section a day, and two ACTs this weekend. He should be more comfortable with all the sections come next week so we can refine some of his test taking strategies."
"I had my first session with the student tonight. He is a very smart individual. We will need to do some prep for his exam on vocab, spelling and reading comprehension. Tonight we focused on test skills, vocab, and beginning reading comprehension. He showed excellent processing skills for these areas. I look forward to continuing my work over the next month with him. Next session I will get a better understanding of his math levels (previous scores indicate this is his strength)."
"Worked on problems with which she had difficulty from problem set five and previous practice tests. She clearly has a very good grasp on the material as seen through her very detailed and thoughtful questions"
"The student and I worked on his practice multiplication problems that are given as timed tests in school. We also went over his incorrect answers on last week's homework assignment. The majority of the time, we went over addition and multiplication flash cards, trying to use the tricks we're learning and master memorization."
