Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had no spelling list this week, as Spring Break approaches. Instead, we did a general review comprised of selected words from 10 of his spelling lists from earlier in the year, made up into a list of sentences. We also continued reading "And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street", and finished "Bartholemew Cubbins"."
"Today we started studying for the student's Science final, which is on Wednesday. I hope to have 2-3 sessions with her before the final, inclusive of today. The Science final covers the entire year, so I organized all her old Science tests and we started working through them. The first topics covered were cell biology and genetics. I am actually quite pleased with her performance today. I was very surprised by how well she remembered the information, even though it was covered so long ago. I think, if she were to retake those same tests today, she would actually get better scores than she did originally. We discussed all topics that came up that she had a bit of difficulty with, including Mendelian inheritance and stem cell differentiation. I tried to keep our discussions very current and relevant, playing on my experiences in bio-research, and I think she thrived off of that approach. By the end of our session today, we had covered about 30% of her old tests."
"1. We completed a reading on the Original Cowboy and answered reading comprehension questions. 2. We both read The Closet Creature and answered two pages of comprehension questions. 3. I gave him a short assignment to complete on The Closet Creature reading (identify the main characters, setting, everything a 5th grade student should know.) The student's father was pleased that I was working with his son."
"Today the student and I went over her assignment prompt for an upcoming paper and discussed strategies for writing it. In addition, we went over a recently graded short assignment and discussed grammar/structure."
"The student took the timed English test today, scoring her highest score so far. We were both thrilled! She then took a timed reading test."
"Finished up the program to read grade letters from a file and calculate a GPA. It will read multiple rows from the file and calculate a GPA for all the grade letters on each row. Finished up the program to read in notes and frequencies from a file and store them in a lookup table. Then read notes and durations from a second file and looked up the frequency and played each note for the duration indicated to play a song. Then covered some binary search tree questions and interview / career related questions, especially focused on data science / analytics."
