Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Carro in Oak Forest, IL
This tutorial session focused on study and organization skills and a math pre-assessment in the area of geometry. During the study and organization skills component of our session, we established and organized a binder that the student will use to maintain school and homework assignments. Along with a section for each school subject, the binder also included a study organization section that included a "To Do Task List" for items related to tutorial sessions and school and a student planner to record, plan, and organize school assignments. In the second half of our session, the student completed a pre-assessment in math in the area of geometry. This assessment will be used to establish baseline data for the student in geometry and to identify any deficits in this area. These deficits will be addressed in subsequent sessions. We concluded our session with a review of the student's homework assignments for this evening.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Tessa in Oak Forest, IL
Today, we worked on an allegory, from which we were able to discuss vocabulary, metaphor, and reading comprehension. The student did very well with the allegory, recalling his teacher's lesson today on Dr. Seuss. We needed to pay special attention to adjectives versus adverbs and will be reviewing those words. He is sounding quite confident in his class abilities and has stated he's feeling good about his grades. I'm looking forward to seeing how this assurance boosts his performance even further.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Katherine in Oak Forest, IL
During this session, we touched on the student's math, English, and history work. For Math, he was working with rational algebraic expressions, to factor, simplify, and find any values for x that did not exist. The values that did not exist were ones that would make the denominator of a fraction equal to zero. His math skills are very strong, but he does have some difficulty with problem solving--figuring out what math he needs to do. To help with his problem solving skills, we spent some time doing logic puzzles. I think it would be beneficial for him to continue finding fun but difficult logic problems to solve, in order to develop his logical reasoning and problem solving skills. In English, he was working on a reading guide for Animal Farm. As he completed the guide, we talked about the different themes and characters in the book, and the message that George Orwell was trying to portray. For history, he was completing a reading guide on World War II. We made some connections between Animal Farm and the government and leadership during World War II. Great work! It's been a pleasure to work with the student! Enjoy your last few months of middle school, and best of luck in the fall!

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Olivia in Oak Forest, IL
Today our main objective was the student's rough draft for her comparison essay (due Friday). We used the T-diagram and notes from class she had, and within the hour and a half, she was able to write her three body paragraphs, an introduction, and conclusion paragraph. We will meet again after spring break! We are still waiting to hear back from her science teacher about the book he uses for his curriculum.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Johnita in Oak Forest, IL
We discussed her language arts, which consisted of a vocabulary assignment in which you determine the definition of a word from context. We had some extra time after completing the assignment, so I wrote up some system of equation problems for her to do as a review of our last math assignment.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Marc in Oak Forest, IL
Today, 3/9, The student and I started with mathematics. We reviewed her homework assignment on system of equations. Using her knowledge of graphing lines, we were able to solve system of equations graphically. She also learned how to check a solution to see if it's correct. We also worked through her review packet, focusing on questions she had difficulty with. We practiced solving algebraic equations with fractional coefficients, scientific notation, and solving for perimeter given sides of shapes in terms of variables. Overall, she did well with math. We ended today's session with biology, where we discussed the reproductive system. We focused on the cellular aspects- i.e. meiosis ( production of gametes).
