Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began this session by working on math. We worked through about 35 problems from a practice math section and talked about the problems she had trouble solving. In the problems we worked on, she did well in algebraic manipulation, including simplifying expressions and solving equations, as well as on using linear equations. She said that, in the math section, she could figure problems out by reasoning but didn't know the shortcuts to solve them, leading her to spend more time on each problem. We talked about certain problems where shortcuts could be used and practiced using graphing, drawing diagrams, and substituting numbers in for variables to solve problems. She did seem to spend more time than ideal on each problem - to decrease her time, she should continue to familiarize herself with the different types of math problems on the ACT and strategies for each of these types. In the second half of this session, she and I discussed the essay portion of the ACT. We looked at a sample response to an essay prompt that had scored well and talked about what aspects of it led to its score. We then looked at another essay prompt and discussed how she might go about making an outline for her response to it. I suggested that she move between the general and the specific, making sure to incorporating specific examples in her essay to illustrate her points. We also talked about how to make the essay as persuasive as possible - for example, by not using "I think"ù or "I believe"ù in it."
"The student and I worked through math and began science. I assigned her some science practice problems for next session and she will look at the writing material."
"The student and I went over the assessment: reading/English, and extra English practice that we will continue with in our next session."
