Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The purpose of our fourth session was to perfect both papers. The student had come a long way. Each paper had an organized structure and told a strong, detailed story in his own voice. There was consistency in terms of sentence structure and variety in terms of diction. All of the boxes were checked. His only remaining task was to edit the paper, including nuances in structure or tone. We approached this in the same way that had proven successful in the past. With two fresh papers (the personal statement and the work and activities paper) in front of us, we worked our way through the first and then the second piece. We then went back through and, as we had done previously, looked at each highlight in context of the edited paragraph and overall paper. He eliminated anything that didn't contribute to the content and rephrased the rest by taking out superfluous words and phrases. He replaced certain words in order to keep the overall tone consistent (i.e. active and upbeat). Once finished, he said that he was pleased with his progress and felt very positive about both papers. I then suggested that we each review the papers a final time before discussing how to proceed with final questions and/or concerns."
"Discussed student's college admission essay and revisions to two shorter versions for submission to different schools according to their different length requirements."
"I am helping the student write her essay for the Common Application, as well as some other essays geared toward specific schools. We talked about each essay prompt, and I tried to get a feel for what seemed to inspire her the most. She already had one rough draft, which I edited and then discussed with her at length. When I left, she felt she had more direction as she tackled the second draft; I will be able to review her work next week."
