Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued working on the student's academic writing. I encouraged him to avoid the personal voice, exclamations, and turns of speech common to everyday conversation."
"The student and I began this session by working on the ACT's reading section. We worked on three reading passages: we talked through the first two, and I timed her as she worked through the third one herself. We practiced "previewing"ù the questions for a passage before reading the passage to get a framework for understanding the text. She did well - she was able to summarize the main ideas of each passage, and had no major problems in answering the questions. In the second part of the session, she and I worked on English. She did very well, getting 28 out of 30 questions right. In the last part of the session, she and I worked on math. She did a good job testing answers when she did not know how to do a problem. She was not familiar with terminology of certain problems. For these problems, we discussed the meaning of terms like "rational number,"ù "even function,"ù and "modulus."ù She understood why a certain answer was correct once she knew what the terms meant. At the end of the session, I also showed her a practice website, where she could get additional practice."
"We reviewed homework, and the student's homework is to finish the Reading section. We are meeting again on Friday and will discuss the essay."
