Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This morning's session focused on primarily on the verbal section of the ISEE. The student demonstrated an ability to pick up on the concepts quickly. Looking at the verbal section, we reviewed her results for the verbal diagnostic test on which she did great. I provided the student with additional instructional material and advised her to make flashcards. Toward the end of our session, we did concentrated practice on synonyms using words with prefixes and suffixes. She showed marked improvement today!"
"Today, we met at the public library and used a study room in the kids' section. They took a full practice test. Since they've worked through all available practice tests collectively, I gave them an old, challenging test that they've each worked on parts separately, but which neither of them knew completely. It gave them a chance to review what we've done before, remember the steps, and reconsider the way they approached it the first time. They both did well, although I've seen the male student do better on previous verbal reasoning sections (this one was tricky, though). We took a few breaks, and I allowed them to shorten sections in which they both had a lot of free time. We'll go over the results more thoroughly and we'll review their essays for the first time tomorrow."
"Today we started afresh with the Mathematics Achievement section. If we had more time (the student is taking the test next weekend), I would go back to basics on some concepts, delve more into test-taking strategies and explore why she is hesitant to try and apply these, and so on and so forth, but at this point it makes the most sense to ensure she gets as much exposure and practice as she can. She did a good job of pacing tonight. She got through three quarters of the MA section, all of the synonyms (Verbal), and one of the reading passages (Reading Comprehension). She definitely performed better on the math this evening."
