Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the beginning of Chapter 4, discussing the relationship between two equations of a line."
"We discussed polynomials, inverse equations and quadratic functions. We covered material that was on the student's practice test and helped her prepare for her test on Friday."
"We reviewed a mixture of different topics, adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers using the school's online platform."
"The student did not perform well on his Unit 14 test, so we prepared for his re-take test scheduled for this week. We reviewed simplifying radicals and performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using radical, exponential, whole number, and fraction properties. We re-worked each problem that he missed points on his exam for; most of his mistakes were due to not simplifying the problem completely or missing steps of shown work, which the directions explained were necessary to receive full credit. I encouraged him again to write out the full steps for each problem, so he would not mistakenly keep numbers in radicals after finding their square roots. He also checked some of his simplified answers using the calculator. We discussed how to distribute radicals as well as how to use F.O.I.L. to simplify squared radical expressions. I created a mock mini-quiz (10 questions) following the same format as some of the questions he missed on the test; he answered all but one of the questions correctly. I reminded him to review and study independently the entire test (even the questions he answered correctly) before he has his re-take. He was focused during the session and asked clarifying questions when necessary."
"We continued with linear equations. There is still a lot of work to do before the student's final on Monday. We will meet tomorrow and Saturday."
"In today's session with the student, we focused on solving quadratic equations. Although his class has started this chapter, I helped him look ahead of his class and learn how to solve quadratic functions by completing the square and using the quadratic formula. Overall, he has been doing an amazing job over the last few weeks. The material has come so naturally and he has worked hard to master it. He didn't have any problems with the material today, even though it usually gives students a wealth of issues. We nearly finished all of chapter 6, and so when his class catches up, he will surely have a greater hold on the material than the rest of his classmates. For extra practice, I recommend that he continue working on the word problems at the end of the chapter, since those are the most beneficial to study with. I am confident that he can finish the year strongly with the way that he's been going."
