Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on the student's math homework that is due tomorrow. He seems to be keeping up much better this quarter."
"Today we worked on absolute value inequalities. We went through an online problem set as usual and discussed the concepts. The student seemed to improve throughout our session, and she will be well prepared for her test on Wednesday."
"The session began with warm up problems dealing with PEMDAS. The student has to decide the order of operations to solve the equation. He told me in the last session that he is working on the Pythagorean theorem. We worked on proving if a triangle is a right angle triangle by using the theorem. Then, we used the same theorem to find the length of missing sides of triangles. His accuracy greatly improved when he used his extended time to calculate."
"The student has a high school math placement exam in two weeks and she wanted a comprehensive review of algebra. We spent our time going over a worksheet her teacher gave her. It covered the following: solving system of equations (by graphing, substitution and elimination), simplifying equations with exponents, graphing equations, polynomial division, factoring equations, finding rational zeroes, and using the quadratic equation. She has a strong command over the various topics. Overall, she found the session to be very useful."
"Today we covered algebra for about an hour, and finished the session by covering a bit of geometry. We went over quadratics for about 45 minutes. We covered using the quadratic equation to solve quadratics, as well as factoring. We also put equations in vertex form by completing the square. We also graphed a few parabolas. Then we went over the domain and range of rational functions, focusing on finding the domain given an equation. We finished with a brief introduction/review of geometry. Topics were not covered in depth but rather introduced at a very shallow level, as requested by the student."
"Today the student and I continued to work our way through her Algebra I textbook. We reviewed using the quadratic formula and learned how to use the discriminant to find out how many solutions a problem had. We finished the last couple of sections of the quadratic chapter of the textbook and moved on to the radical chapter, chapter 11. We started with a review of radical rules including multiplying and dividing radicals. We ended on rationalizing the denominators of fractions and when we meet again that is where we pick up again. The session overall went very well. She seemed to understand the material without a problem. I think that as long as she continues to have tutoring sessions and begins to review her notes she will be successful in Algebra II."
