"This was a comprehensive first session; we covered a lot of material, and I found the student to be an attentive, motivated student, a pleasure to work with. We discussed her goals with the SAT and her previous experience- she had taken it once before, and had the most difficulty in the math section. She hopes to increase her score into the 2000's, and she plans to take the test in November. I discussed my aim to provide her with some strategies and tools for success, as well as give her the targeted practice she needs.
For this session we focused on math. While math was her lowest score the first time she took the SAT, I found that she has a solid basic math and algebra foundation-- in short, she has all the skills she needs to succeed. She just needs some support in putting them all together in a timed SAT-type setting. We talked a little about some test-taking tips and strategies: working on the easy problems first and marking the hard ones to come back to later. She has trouble with the more complex/multi-step problems that require synthesizing knowledge of geometric formulas, as well as word problems. We worked through some of these; I gave her some tips like drawing out the problem, "finding something to set equal to something else", and annotating important phrases and units. We also refreshed some algebra- in particular, solving systems of linear equations (by elimination-addition) and exponent problems. I left her a few practice problems to keep these skills sharp, and we will continue to make math problems the focus of many of our sessions.
Overall, I think the student gained some confidence and some tips that will help her succeed.
Next session, we'll work more on math, concentrating more on geometry this time. Additionally, I'll bring a calendar, and together we'll create a study program for the student to map her SAT studying out into the week (in conjunction with school, etc.). I find that this kind of thing helps with focus and preparation for the test. We also discussed taking the time every so often to take a practice test, or at least practice section, in timed conditions, and we will map these into the study program as well. I think this kind of a clear study program will greatly benefit the student's test preparation as well as maximize our tutoring sessions."
