Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over her math homework and project, reviewed for her geometry quiz, and went over her biology lab and handout. With geometry she said it was an "abstract" test - instead of working with numbers her teacher had them do everything with variables and ratios."
"Taught Student 1 indirect and direct object pronouns using online lessons and mini quiz materials. Practiced "prefiero," "tengo," "me gusta," and "quiero" with the students with "yo" and "tu" conjugations."
"Went over several financial accounting topics, including the components of financial statements. Student brought a case study to work on, and worked on variations and adjustments to financial statements and the effects of different changes."
"Physics Chapter 11: Vibrations and waves: simple harmonic motion, periodic motion, restoring forces, elastic potential energy, amplitude, period, frequency, wave properties, mechanical waves, transverse/longitudinal waves, wave interactions, superposition, interference patterns (constructive/destructive, compression/rarefaction), reflection, standing waves"
"For the student's last session I administered part B (short answer)of two tests but only had him answer challenging questions. I picked for their complexity. In addition, I gave him lesser time to answer them then he would have on the test. Afterward, I showed him a strategies to help him quickly read through long questions (e.g. questions with 4 or more lines of background information to read). Despite the challenge, the student did correctly answer most of the questions he got to. I'm confident he will do well on the exam because he finishes the multiple choice questions quickly. He'll have much more time to answer short answer and essay portions of the test. He's still confident and excited to take the exam tomorrow (Friday)."
"Before our first session today I spoke with the student about her progress at school. She is a bright student and she is a sophomore who is placed a bit ahead of the general high school layout (she also hasn't taken geometry or regular Bio). I plan to fill in the gaps to keep her up to speed in her classes. Last night we covered topics in Trigonometry. She told me that she better understood what was going on in her classes after our session, so we are on the right track."
"Basic Diagnostic for SSAT. Classified math topics that they have no understanding, limited understanding, full understanding, etc., of to cover in future sessions. Discussed root words, prefixes and suffixes and assigned words to memorize for homework. "
"Today we focused on b and d words. I had the student write a few words for each letter before we started reading (she did really well with this). As we read through the book I had her pick out and find b/d words; she was able to spot them fairly quickly, and read them easily. Her hesitation in b/d's today was more while reading words that had a b or d in the middle. We will continue to review this on Thursday and incorporate words with b/d in the middle of them. "
"I answered a few questions the student had. We then spent time going through several homework/practice problems. He has an upcoming test so, we went over a few general topics. He is to study over the weekend and we'll go over material together the following week in preparation for his exam."
"Reviewed a full test that the student took. She did well. She got 9/10 of the student-produced response questions correct, and she used to not do well on those at all. Since we had the time, I reviewed both verbal and math sections, which was good because there were verbal tricks and facts that I was able to tell here about that she didn't know . I recommended she take another full test and we are meeting again on May 3 for the last time before her May 9 test."
"The student and I reviewed problems for his upcoming exam on sections. Topics that we discussed were classifications of parallelograms as rhombuses, rectangles, and squares. We also discussed isosceles trapezoids and kites. The student improved a lot, especially on problems that required him to classify shapes whose vertices were given as points on a coordinate plane."
"We spent today detangling past simple. Conversation, and writing. She's familiar with all the grammar. I brought a pronunciation exercise, which we shall do next class. Next class I will be bringing her an English workbook too. I also gave her some online resources"
