Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered how to write an essay for the History exam. The student struggles a little bit with her thesis writing, but I feel like she showed some improvement as the tutoring session went on, and I am not concerned that she will not do well. I asked that she use some of the techniques that we learned today in class to help her with her essay and let me know how it went."
"In today's lesson I mostly helped the student with his American history. We discussed the 4th chapter in his U.S. history book, about the development of colonial society in the 18th century and the beginning of a distinctive American culture. I looked over and discussed with him a document assignment that he did in class and then I gave him a brief quiz for the relevant period from the AP textbook. The last half an hour we discussed The Scarlet Letter and reviewed some AP English vocabulary terms."
"Today we discussed Chapters 10 and 11, with strong focuses on Jackson, the Industrial Revolution, and the expansion of trade and transportation. The student has shown improvement on her exams and has just concluded the first 9 week period at school. She was also encouraged to try to revise her notes using one or more of the explained methods as a means of active study. Her skills are progressing, and she even answered my follow-up questions before I had to ask!"
"The student and I worked through his papers that are due this week. They focused on things that occurred in the late 1700s - early 1800s, especially during the Jeffersonian era. He did well with these."
"Today we worked on a presentation on the Mexican-American war. The student had a little trouble at first seeing beyond the basic details of who, what, where, and when -- we spent a good deal of time establishing the direction that American history was taking, in terms of the split between slave states and free states and in terms of expansion and manifest destiny."
"The student and I reviewed material from Chapters 34 and 35 for upcoming quizzes on these chapters. We also discussed approaches to preparing for the AP World History exam. He seemed to have a pretty good grasp of the material overall."
