Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student will take her test on January 7th and she is reviewing all the math topics covered on the test. She worked on a higher level test and did very well. She is working on how to take the test and how to attack each problem."
"The student read a few chapters of his homework, worked on topic, and supporting details. He also read a part in a short story with the other student and I. The other student wrote a story about my secret super powers. He did much better in his writing when he told me the story first."
"We began by practicing random sight words from the bag of flash cards. Over all of our sessions, the student has completed all of the sight word cards. We then played the word-building game that the student brought. He then read a total of 4 books; This is much more than we used to read and really shows progress. I did a final reading test with him and he passed."
"This was the first session with the student--she is taking the ISEE in the middle of January. We started off by talking about the test, reviewing the sections, and trying a few sample questions of each type. She was off to a good start for vocabulary and sentence completions. She has started a word list for new vocab. With some prompting, she generally got the sample math questions right. We went to chapter 10 of the book, which lays out a lot of the basics behind the math section and started working. She does need to be reminded sometimes about solving problems step by step instead of just guessing. We spent a good chunk of time going over simplifying fractions and other early parts of the chapter. She is going to take a diagnostic ISEE tomorrow. After that we'll keep going through the math chapter and address other grow areas. "
"Today we worked on the student's POW for the week. She knows how to guess and check but has trouble translating her work into words. These critical thinking exercises are really good for her. After we finished that, we had a multiplication contest to see how fast she could get the answers to practice for her timed tests. She's got the 3x0, 1, 2, 3s and the 3x10, 9s down, but in the middle she has trouble. We're practicing rhymes and other jingles to remember the middle section!"
"We discussed another article--this time on the Algerian wars. The discussion veered into current events and issues that gave the student the chance to practice. Along the way, we visited grammar as needed."
