Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed a couple of passages that the student completed over the weekend, focusing again on trying to generalize passage parts instead of merely summarizing them. We specifically chose to review Humanities passages. He seems to be getting more comfortable with my suggested approach. He and I both feel that his goals are attainable with more practice and more direction from me."
"COVERED: Newton's Laws, kinematics (briefly), Normal Force, Friction, Energy, Work, Work-Energy Theorem. I closed with some advice on practice materials. CHALLENGES: Student has need for guidance on the physical sciences. EXTRA PRACTICE: She will do some problems on the covered topics."
"We covered 3 physics passages from the workbook, focusing on reasoning/strategies. She's following a schedule for studying that should work well to get her through all the material well before her test date -- next session we'll probably be focusing still more on the PS section, plus any other questions from the work she does during the week."
"After introductions and orientations, we attacked exponents/logs/scientific notation and then transitioned to simple and compounded interest. Many of the compounding problems cannot be solved without a calculator so we went as far as the solution set up and called that good. The student has a remarkably quick mind for quant, after some brush up, and he began answering some questions by quick and intuitive inspection. I encourage that method when the student is sharp enough to have a "feel" for where the right answer lays. He also has a "feel" for when he's confident with estimation and intuition, and when it's time to go to the calculation model and wrestle the problem to the ground."
"We had a good session on word problems. We covered the general strategy of breaking down problems into two timed parts: tackle the general strategy and then crunch the numbers."
"The student and I moved into our review of algebra strategies, covering plugging in numbers, hidden plug ins, and plugging in the answers. He was doing well with his intuition on these questions but could use some solid review of arithmetic skills. I referred him to a test prep site to practice his skills on a number of topics. I assigned him PS 1 and 2. Next session we will do MBT plugging in and move on to substantive algebra."
