Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we reviewed a practice test that the student took during the week, starting with the Critical Reading section. We brainstormed methods for him, creating a review sheet of test-taking. These methods included re-reading the question to be sure what it was saying, looking for context clues in reading passages, and using extra time to go back and double-check answers. Next, we looked at the Writing Skills section, adding the following to the review sheet: identify to what subjects the modifying phrases refer, study vocabulary, and mentally substitute each answer option into the question sentence before deciding which is correct. Finally, we went over the math section, adding the tips to take his time on each question, and write out all his work."
"We went through a bunch of practice problems together. We mostly focused on math and talked about using process of elimination and other strategies."
"PSAT: format, structure, scoring, prep and strategies, pitfalls, assess weaknesses, practice strategies, provided plan for the next leading up to the test."
"PSAT Reading & Writing: For this session the student and I went over her homework from last week, the practice reading comprehension questions. She completed a few passages, and she did very well with the last double passage reading. We went over all the passages she did, starting with this double passage. She took the right initiative by reading the questions first and answering those that asked about only one passage or the other. She answered all but two correctly, leaving three 2-passage questions blank. We discussed how to do about doing vocabulary questions in these settings (not looking at the answers "“ they most likely will trick the test taker) and also about how to answer the "hypothetical"ù questions (looking at implied ideas and word choice in the passage itself). Going over the three incomplete questions, she and I discussed using phrases in the question itself to find answers in both texts "“ she has to identify the "key phrase"ù or subject of the sentence, and look for that phrase or like phrases in each passage. Then she should just read around them to get context, and can find answers that way. She also did two long passage readings from this HW in her book while I was present and she got almost all the questions right! She said that since it was just "practice"ù she answered without thinking too hard or analyzing her own answer choices too much. She also took a Writing Section from an old PSAT, on which she got a raw score of 19! This section is pretty easy for her and she knows where to skip questions (the improving sentences). It is very easy to get overwhelmed by these questions, which is why I assigned her homework next week doing practice questions on this section. Overall, a really good session and I can see her improvement in both her scoring and her attitude!"
"We spent time working on math concepts and strategies. A review of geometry was really helpful. The student's performance on homework problems showed improvement in math and reading skills."
"The student and I went through several practice PSAT math sections that she had done earlier in the week. We corrected her errors and she worked through several sample problems that were similar to the questions she answered incorrectly. We also went over her errors on a Critical Reading section, and together went through a Writing section. She is showing strong improvement across all sections for the PSAT."
"Worked exclusively on math for our final PSAT session. Will meet a couple of times before the SAT in November."
"Today we reviewed the student's final practice test. We tried to identify any remaining weaknesses and create a list of important tips to review and remember going into the test. Overall though, his skills are very strong at this point, with his scores in each section consistently 90th percentile or above as compared to last year's test takers."
"Today we covered PSAT verbal practice, including tricks for figuring out unfamiliar vocab words and critical reading practice."
"Because this is our last session before the PSAT, we went through and talked about strategies for all sections while going through incorrect answers from the practice test the girls took last session. Student A has shown tremendous improvement in the math section, and continues to do exceptionally well in the reading section. Student B maintains her skill in math and has improved in reading. Both of the girls do well in writing. Overall, I think they are very well prepared for the PSAT and I expect they will do very well."
"We worked on writing and math last night. Specifically, we worked on the part of the writing section that the student struggles with the most."
"First, we organized the student's binders and checked that his assignments were written out in his phone. The majority of our session was spent on college entrance exam preparation. We went through the practice test together to assess what we need to focus most on. Mainly, he just needs to slow down and read all of the answer choices."
