Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed Social Studies, Science, and English to prepare for her upcoming finals. She needed help the most with Social Studies."
"For our first session, the student, her mother and I sat down together and discussed both the student's goals for our sessions and her opinion on what might be challenging her to reach her desired academic success. I had a great time speaking to both, and it became clear that the student is not struggling for lack of enthusiasm or for that matter, a lack of organization. In looking through the student's agenda, it is evident that she keeps good notes on assignments she has to complete and manages to do well with her homework. My suspicion is that while the student is willing and quite able to complete work at her appropriate grade level, she has a more difficult time with retention and application of that knowledge for tests and quizzes that come later. While I gave the student some study and organizational tips to get her started, in the future we will work to ensure that she understands concepts across a breadth of subjects (she will keep notes on things she does not understand for us to go over together) and also work to equip the student with the skills she needs to productively engage her teachers. I look forward to working with the student and tweaking our sessions as needed to ensure the student is both comfortable and confident in her classes."
"Today student #1 and student #2 had a joint session of study skills. They took an online quiz of their learning styles and I used that information to figure out study strategies that are useful for their studying. We brainstormed some steps to take when a test is approaching and talked about how to utilize textbooks and other non-human resources for dire situations. We also talked about memorization techniques and introducing the idea of memorizing in different environments, as they both tested highly in the naturalistic and kinesthetic learning styles. We also talked about how to digest material, using outlining and mapping to transfer content on a page of a textbook into your brain. Student #2's parents are pushing hard for him to get straight As this semester in order to push for an acceptance from the college of his choice. Therefore we planned together for maximizing tutoring sessions and hammering down study skills in order to get all As in school. We will be meeting three times a week. It seems like my relationship with the two siblings is growing substantially. This seems to improve our tutoring sessions."
"I worked with the student on an exercise to build essay writing skills. I had her read and highlight information from an article, develop a thesis statement, and use post-its to create body paragraphs and form it into an outlined essay. After this exercise, she continued reviewing key terms for World History from the previous session. She maintained a positive attitude."
"I had a wonderful session with the students. Student 1 worked hard on her school assignments and some math word problems I had created for her. Student 2 and I worked on his reading comprehension and vocabulary."
"The student and I went over the math problems he missed in his old homework packets. We also went over math concepts he is learning in class. I taught him the divisibility rules for 2, 3 and 5."
