Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I recommended to the student to use the tactic of writing out a mission statement for his writing pieces, in order to hone his ideas and understand his goals. The student applied this technique to a sample college essay he wrote about a place that is meaningful to him. I also gave him detailed feedback on the essay's strengths and weaknesses. I could tell that the student had applied some of the writing principles we've been discussing in our sessions. For example, he used concrete description quite effectively, and made sure to "give words their space". I did, however, recommend that he rework the order of paragraphs, and that he not be afraid of "zooming in" to draw out vital details. I suggested that next time he print out his essay and examine it for errors before bringing it to our session. Next, I provided feedback on the student's summary paragraph of a Supreme Court case. Lastly, the student delivered a presentation on genetically modified foods, which he will do in his English class soon. I advised him to slow down his delivery pace, emphasize and enunciate words, make more eye contact, consolidate his outline onto a note card, and consider using a visual aid."
"The student worked on creating a concise outline for the grad school personal statement. We are meeting again tomorrow to go over grammar, sentence structure, and clarity."
"We spent most of our time looking over some short-answer essays she wrote for questions related to "Oedipus Rex". The student struggles mainly with articulating her thoughts intelligibly. This is primarily due to the language barrier. Slowly, however, she is speaking and writing better. Her attitude is very positive and very motivated. We spent a lot of our time discussing word choice and sentence structure. I directed her to spend more of her free time reading and writing most anything so that she can develop a higher level of comfort with English. She showed me that she received an A- on a recent writing assignment. Overall, the student is quite bright, very polite, very hardworking, and a respectable thinker and writer. Though there's still work to be done, she's clearly learning how to articulate herself better."
