Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the Spanish-American war, and Philippine American war. Within this we covered the independence of Cuba and the Panama Canal. We went over the assigned reading for the previous day, and went over all that was due for the next class. I was happy to hear that the student received a 9.5/10 on her speech. She also recorded the time it took for her to read a section of the book and take notes, as I had asked her to do. I am impressed with her determination to understand the material during our tutoring sessions. For her homework, I told her to read the assigned readings, and it was understood that she should focus on the questions given by the teacher. I would like to see her finish the US history readings a little earlier than she has. We talked about this, and she mentioned that she has been taking advantage of free opportunities to do homework. I also showed her a strategy for when she reviews a chapter. The technique is to read the first sentence of a paragraph and the last. Usually a textbook is ordered to tell you the main point of the paragraph in the beginning and the end of the paragraphs. I told her she had to still read, but that this was helpful for reviewing. This is a great first step and I was very glad to hear she was doing this . All in all, I see the student improving."
"The student worked on a project for state history involving a comparison of Incan and Hopi cultures. I retrieved documents from the internet for her and formatted them appropriately. We discussed the quality of the various documents as we formatted them. I also helped to prepare a works cited list."
"The student and I began with letter writing for his history project, thanking a member of a historic site for an interview he was granted. Then we moved to planning out how he will accomplish his project in actionable steps. Then we broke down some misconceptions on his cards and made a plan to finish the rest of his notes ahead of schedule, as he always does. The student worked hard and it was a great session. We definitely used the planning calendar and functions in Microsoft Word to plan for executing these projects. I left him with a minimum of 3-4 notes to complete per day before I see him next week."
