Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"It was great to meet and work with the student. She is very motivated to improve her writing skills. Today's session dealt with creating an outline on her upcoming paper and strategies on accessing information from research material."
"Today was my first session with the student. I spent the beginning of the session getting to know him a little bit. During the remainder of our session, we worked on various writing prompts. He had to create a thesis and three details to support it for each prompt. He seemed to have a good understanding of the assignment after we got started. He is very eager to get back on top of things as an advanced A student."
"The first student outlined and started writing a persuasive essay on a memorable place. The student focused on giving as many examples as possible to support her statement. She always has great ideas, but I usually have to push her further to get her to elaborate on those ideas. Her assignment is to finish the essay. The second student worked on his school assignment for a close analysis of 8-10 lines of Book 11 of the Odyssey. He found a passage he thought was full of meaning, and went through line by line finding the deeper meaning."
"During our tutoring session, the student and I worked on outlining his next essay assignment. The essay has to be on the book "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Specifically, he has chosen to write about the ways the author uses character's emotions to make them long for something elusive. We discussed the thesis of his paper and topics for his body paragraphs. We also discussed the different methods he could use to provide evidence for his argument. He was very engaged during the session. He asked frequent questions and was not afraid to ask me for help."
"The student and I had a great session today! He worked on an assignment for his English class that will also appear in his school newspaper. The topic was on YouTube. He researched the points, came up with an outline, and wrote a really excellent article. Next, I had him work on a creative writing assignment - I wrote the first line to a story and had him write the rest of the story."
"This was my first session with the student. I spent some time getting to know his interests, both academic and non-academic, as well as the areas in school that he is less drawn to or is having difficulty with. We then looked over his current assignments. He was given a list of questions to answer for a test he was not yet given, so I took the opportunity to go over the questions from an analytical lens. This gave him an opportunity to think about the significance of each question so that he will have an easier time answering the questions later on. I also went over an introduction paragraph he had written and helped him develop a more thorough and concise argument. He is a very bright and motivated student who was great to work with. I have instructed him to think about the goals he has for our sessions and to report back during our next session."
