Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked on a project where she was required to interpret a data set of stock price closings throughout a year. We solved some probability problems under the assumption that the data set was normal, and then had to determine if the data set was indeed normal. Finally, she did a homework problem that asked her to identify a critical value (though not using that vocabulary yet) from a probability."
"This week's material was on probability distributions. We reviewed calculations for mean and standard deviation of discrete and binomial variables. We reviewed his homework assignment, and he did problems on finding discrete and cumulative probabilities."
"We went over questions 12, 16, 20, 22, and 24 on the student's HW. These questions covered normal distributions, sampling distributions, and proportions. I recommended strategies for her to know when to use which equation."
"We covered normal distribution and calculating probability from it. We first reviewed how to differentiate binomial distribution from normal. Once the student was able to tell the difference, we focused on the different scenarios presented by normal distribution and how to solve them. I showed him how to implement the z score formula and how to use the calculator. He was able to use the formulas in direct application, but he initially had trouble understanding how to use the concepts in specific context. I showed him what keywords to look out for and how to implement the techniques depending on the situation. Once he felt comfortable with the material, we practiced his mastery with homework problems. We ended the session introducing conditional and marginal probability."
"The student has a test on Sunday so we reviewed many of the topics that will show up. We talked about frequency distributions, how to use standard deviation and variance, and how to interpret the handful of statistics we'd talked about so far."
"Today, the student and I worked on discrete vs. continuous random variables. She completed several practice problems in preparation of her take-home quiz."
