Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is beginning a new unit on motion and force, so we spent the hour reviewing concepts, particularly Newton's laws of motion. It took a lot of explaining and examples, but by the end of the hour, he seemed more comfortable with the new ideas of his new lessons."
"The student had a library book on whales which we read and talked about. Last week, we got a list of vocabulary words he was working on, so before the session, I made colorful picture flashcards to use and play with. We ended with me writing out words on his chalkboard for him to spell and sound out."
"The student and I worked on Chapter 6.1 homework. The concepts covered included discrete probability distribution and continuous probability distribution. The material seemed like a natural extension of Chapter 5 concepts, and he did well on the problems that we worked on. He also mentioned that he had felt good about how he did on his Chapter 5 test."
"During this session, the student and I worked on synonyms and sentence completion. The focus was how to handle questions with vocabulary words that the student does not understand. She is susceptible to the power of suggestion when it comes to vocab - if she sees an answer choice that "sounds right," she will pick it despite not knowing the word or the word's roots. What we worked on during this session was having the student first establish everything she knows with regards to a certain problem, and to work from there, minimizing error. We will continue to work on this in preparation for the test."
"The student did not have homework tonight, but we did some extra practice problems related to linear equations on topics such as y-intercept form, and finding slope. He got a 79% on his test, which was a big improvement over his score on the last quiz. We talked through the things he missed on the test and it was mostly positive and negative signs or just not writing something in. He seemed to be more confident and positive for this session."
"The student worked on her oil project. We checked data consistency and she reformulated the dependent variable. We ran the primary regression and discussed the implications of the data output, the parameters of the oral presentation, and the future of the project."
