Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a ton to cover today. We focused on stoichiometry and reaction problems, provided by his teacher. We are working on remembering his stoichiometric relationships, but after a few problems, he got a better handle. I think he definitely needs to keep practicing before tomorrow, but he has a solid base."
"Today we finished chapter 4 on reactions in aqueous solutions. We reviewed definitions from earlier in the chapter (strong/weak acids/bases, redox) and did practice problems involving molarity (concentration), gravimetric analysis, and titration. The student completed the homework I assigned last time, which we reviewed together, and he said he thought it was the right amount and the practice helped. He has no problems understanding mass/moles/concentration in acid/base neutralization reactions. I am happy with the progress we are making and on Friday we plan to review ideal gas behavior and focus on deviations from ideal gas behavior."
"Today the student completed a homework assignment on electron orbital configurations and another homework assignment on atomic structure (atomic number, mass number, charge and what that means with regard to the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons), isotopes and computing mean atomic masses. Then the student completed a lab activity on precipitating out compounds in sequence given the solubility rules."
"We went through her worksheet for gas laws. I explained them to her and asked her to solve different questions to make sure she understood them. She understood them and she was able to do most of the questions by herself. I also summarized the important parts for her so she can have them handy. She is doing well."
"We covered acids and bases, balancing oxidation-reduction reactions, and identifying reaction types. The student had a clear idea of what she wanted to cover in the session and seemed very engaged with the material. More practice identifying reaction types might be useful."
"The student and I worked on test prep; going over all the subjects and identifying gram->gram conversions and limiting reactants / percent yield problems as the most pressing. We then worked through some problems in the book, and I identified 12 or so practice problems for her to work on before my visit tomorrow. She will also try to get an example exam, so we can do the final test prep tomorrow, before her Thursday exam"
