Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I carefully reviewed the student's two admission essays and made very detailed changes and suggestions. Part of the art of admissions essays is making them stand out from the rest of the pile of applications. From my understanding, the student's college program of choice is a tough program to get into, and we want this essay to truly capture her narrative and how this will make her realize her full potential. There is a lot of work to do on these essays, and I look forward to working with her more. There are many places for her to be more specific and give examples in order to allow her personality and self to really shine through the essays."
"The student uploaded her paper on comparing and contrasting concepts of wealth held by European colonists and Northeastern Indians. The student wanted her overall thesis and paragraph topic sentences reviewed and grammar checked, so I guided her through the process. We also worked rather extensively in sections of her content to clarify relationships among her ideas, sharpen her vocabulary, and reduce redundant wording."
"The student and I discussed her essay on Mexican immigrants, and she outlined some of the major reasons for emigrating, as well as the obstacles encountered upon arriving in the US. She had taken extensive notes in preparation for the essay, as well as underlined/highlighted relevant sections from her book and lecture slides. She needed clarification on the essay prompt so as not to write off-topic, and help with organizing her thoughts into a clear, structured paper. She came up with an outline for the essay, including specific citations/examples she could include to support her main ideas. She also told me a bit about another upcoming essay, a much longer research paper (to be written in both Chinese and English) on urban sprawl in China. We will begin to prepare for this at our next meeting, to take place on February 27 at 2 pm."
