Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, we looked at reading questions on main idea and author's purpose. The student asked good questions about eliminating incorrect answers, and we discussed ways to identify answer choices that are either too specific or too general. We also went over some common "tricks" employed by the test and how to avoid these. Next, we discussed simplifying radicals and reviewed some math concepts that we covered last week. He was able to correctly answer practice questions on all of the above concepts. Finally, we went over the writing section, focusing on ways to provide adequate evidence within the limited available time. We went over pre-writing techniques, and he wrote a strong body paragraph that demonstrated his ability to support his main ideas. I suggested ways to clarify his topic sentences, but overall he seemed very capable of writing an effective essay. He will complete a full practice test before our next meeting."
"Today we reviewed vocabulary, practiced essay brainstorming, went over essay outlining, and reviewed 3-dimensional geometry."
"We focused on the verbal section, specifically analogies. Student had a little difficulty with some of the vocabulary, so I taught her strategies to tackle questions when she was struggling with a word she didn't know. I left her with homework to make notecards of common SSAT vocabulary words."
