"We spent some time going over the student's World Literature course and the assignments for which he is responsible in that course. It seems that one of the biggest challenges that he is currently facing is a lack of clarity on exactly what the teacher's expectations are for the work she assigns. We have agreed that before we can move forward in developing his writing and preparing his next essay (which is not due for a few weeks), we need to first clarify what those expectations are. We also discussed his world history course and the upcoming essay that is due in a little less than a week. We have agreed to meet tomorrow to begin preparing that assignment."
"The student sent me a draft of her essay and I gave her some pointers on structure and focusing on a central thesis. I also identified some awkward portions that could use rephrasing. She sent me a second draft later and it was greatly improved. The central argument was clearly stated and the support was all relevant to that argument. Her structure and content (the most important part of writing) really seem to be improving."
"I made up some scenarios and had the student write 2-3 sentences for each scenario. The student needs to be more creative with his sentence writing to make them more interesting, and this was a good way for him to practice. He actually made some definite improvement. He did not complete all scenarios, and will do so for Thursday's session. We then worked on grammar (verbs), focusing on 6 pages of examples out of a workbook."
